The Ujjawala Scheme was launched on 4 December, 2007. The Scheme is being implemented mainly through Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). Eligible implementing agencies from all States/Union Territories can apply under the scheme.  The project proposals under the scheme are required to be submitted through the concerned State governments/ Union Territory Administrations.  The grants are to be released in two instalments per year and the continuation of grant to an agency is also based on the satisfactory performance reported by the concerned State Government/Union Territory Administration.

This was stated by the Minister for Women and Child Development, Smt. Krishna Tirath in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.
